Decontamination

Problem
The Central City neighbourhood, like many others in New Orleans and across the United States, suffers from unsafe levels of lead contamination. Hurricane Katrina and Rita exacerbated soil contamination by spreading a mix of toxic substances across the city. The soils in the neighbourhood present a health hazard, especially to small children.

Proposal
Phytoremediation has the ability remediate lead and other soil contaminants. The project presents a phased strategy for cleanup and rebuilding. As soils are purified, they become suitable for urban agriculture, redevelopment, and public space.
