Soils

Problem
Current planting strategies do not acknowledge the diversity of soil conditions across New Orleans. As a result, plants do not flourish, and the city’s attempts to rebuild biomass lost during Hurricane Katrina are compromised.

Proposal
The project analyzes soil types and conditions along Elysian Fields Avenue and proposes planting palettes suitable to different locations along the street. Trees, shrubs, and groundcovers are combined in ways that take advantage of soil and water conditions. The varied plant communities established along the length of the street provide a way for city dwellers to register difference along the formerly homogeneous line of the street.
