Crevasse

Problem
Levees along the Mississippi River prevent the deposition of sediment on neighboring land. Wetlands are no longer replenished, and the lack of new soil contributes to subsidence.

Proposal
The project creates a controlled diversion—a crevasse—that allows water from the Industrial Canal into Bayou Bienvenue. The water travels through a meandering channel, where it deposits sediment that can be harvested and placed in low-lying areas across the city. The fresh water also helps to reduce saltwater intrusion into the bayou from Lake Bourgne and the Gulf of Mexico.
