City Park

Problem
Orleans Canal is vulnerable to failure: if its levee walls are undermined, large areas of the city will flood. Just beside the canal, City Park provides large expanses of low, unbuilt space that could store water, but it is not connected to the city’s drainage system hydraulically or hydrologically.

Proposal
The project replaces Orleans Canal with an open channel that runs through City Park. The park’s surface is reconfigured to permit safe, controlled storm water storage if the channel’s capacity is surpassed. The removal of Orleans Canal also creates a tighter connection between the Lakeview neighborhood and the park.
